Type of Portrait I work with various mediums including pastel, acrylic paint, oil paint, colored pencil and alcohol ink. You can choose any medium for your commission although larger artwork (16x20 and above) will be in pastel or acrylic. Examples of all the different mediums can be found in the Gallery page.
How to order After your initial enquiry, we first discuss your ideas and preferences of size and style. I can create your portrait in the medium you choose. The next step is to look through your photographs (either posted or e-mailed) and come to a decision about the final details of the portrait. Once I begin painting, I send progress images in various stages as we go along, to ensure all looks just as it should. I will need a 30% non re-fundable deposit to cover time and materials at this point and payment can be via paypal or personal check/cheque.
TURNAROUND: Turnaround time depends heavily on the portraits I am currently painting, but I usually have a waiting list somewhere in the range of 6-10 weeks. If you do have a special date in mind however (such as a birthday), please let me know and if possible, I will endeavour to get the portrait to you in time.
When the portrait is completed, I send a digital proof of the final painting to you via e-mail. Only if you are completely happy with this image do I ask for the balance of payment prior to shipment of the original portrait.
All of your photographs will be returned safely. Please remember, the detail of the final portrait is directly related to the quality and focus of the photographs you send (Please see Tips on photographs for portraits). Extra photos are also suggested as these can serve as a reference for coloring, close-up details, and personality. Please note: if your photos were taken professionally, you will need to ask the photographer for copyright permission.
Portraits may be any dimension you prefer, although I do tend to specialize in finely detailed paintings of 20 x 16 and under. I paint and draw on finest quality pastel-board for pastel paintings, Frederix Blue Label Canvas for acrylic and oil or heavyweight hot pressed cotton paper for colored pencil art. The finished painting/drawing is also sprayed with a fixative or varnish to ensure its safety and long life.
You can either have no background or I can use colored paper/pastelboard. After seeing your photographs I can suggest which color would work best with the overall composition. If you require a detailed background (landscape, beachfront etc) I can discuss additional pricing with you.
Your portrait will be securely and safely packed and sent to you with a quality matte (up to size 12x16) but it will be unframed. If you require a frame, let me know and I will quote you for framing. Pastel portraits will be covered with glassine paper and it is important to not directly rub or touch the surface due to the delicate nature of pastel. A guide for caring for your portrait will be included.
